The Work of Becoming

Exploring who we are, what we hide, and who we're becoming.

The Work of Becoming grew out of my interest in Stoicism and a more recent curiosity about Carl Jung's ideas. The more I learned and sat with those ideas, the more I wanted to give them a visual form.

The Work of Becoming: five black-and-white paintings framed around the collection title, a staircase, a face, a circle over water, a lit match, and two chairs with a mirror

What it explores

Who we are. What we hide. Who we're becoming.

The collection explores how we understand ourselves, what we hide, what deserves our energy, and how we live with uncertainty.

It reflects the willingness to look inward, question familiar patterns, and acknowledge parts of ourselves we might prefer to avoid.

The larger idea is self-awareness, identity, acceptance, and how we choose to grow, drawing from Stoicism and Carl Jung's ideas, with room for the pieces still to come.

Why black and white

Space to speak.

Working in black and white gives those ideas space to speak. The rough lines, drips, and imperfections belong to that expression.

Personal growth can be uncomfortable, uneven, and hard to recognize while it's happening. I wanted to make something that leaves room for that experience.

How they're made

  1. Black + white onlyAcrylic paint, kept to two colors so the ideas have space to speak.
  2. Built by handBasswood plywood panels on a hand-built 1.5-inch cradle, or stretched canvas.
  3. Texture left inRough lines, drips, and imperfections stay, on purpose.

Still figuring it out

The possibility that we can accept ourselves while we're still figuring ourselves out.
